About this tool

Turn a vague topic into three researchable questions, each with what would count as an answer.

"Something about social media and teenagers" is a subject area, not a research question, and the gap between the two is where most dissertations lose their first month. A question you can actually answer is narrow enough to finish and specific enough that you know when you have finished.

Describe your rough topic and get three candidate questions. Under each, it sets out what would count as an answer, what data or sources you would need to get there, and why it is narrow enough for the scope you named. Where a question genuinely cannot be answered within an undergraduate essay or a one-year masters, it says so instead of offering it anyway — which is a more useful thing to hear now than in month four.

How to use

  1. Describe your rough topic, name your field if it helps, and choose whether this is for an essay, dissertation or thesis
  2. Press Generate and give it a few seconds.
  3. Copy what you need, or generate again for a different take — every run is fresh.

Frequently asked questions

Narrow enough that you can state what evidence would answer it. If you cannot describe what a convincing answer would look like, the question is still a topic.

It describes the kind of data or sources each question needs, but it does not cite specific papers — AI is prone to inventing plausible-sounding references. Find real sources through your library database.

Treat all three as starting points and take them to your supervisor. Supervisors know the literature, the marking criteria and what has already been done to death in your department.

No. Your input is sent to the AI provider this site is configured to use purely to generate your result, and is not stored here afterwards. There is no account for it to be attached to. Even so, keep passwords, financial details and other people's private information out of it.

The site owner selects one model that powers every tool here, so there is nothing for you to configure. Describe what you need, press Generate, and read the result before you use it.
